The Oklahoma Fire Danger Model (Carlson and others 1996) is a cooperative effort between Oklahoma State University and the Missoula Fire Sciences Laboratory, with programming and operational support from the University of Oklahoma. Using weather from the Oklahoma Mesonet, Oklahoma's real-time automated weather station network of over 110 stations, the Fire Danger Model integrates a 1-km fuels map and 1-km relative greenness from weekly satellite imagery to produce daily NFDRS indices over the state of Oklahoma. Oklahoma Fire Danger Model output occurs 11 times daily (hourly during the afternoon) and consists of maps and tables of fire weather information. The KBDI index is updated once daily. The model is used extensively in Oklahoma for management decisions related to prescribed burning as well as wildfire outbreaks. It is used to assist the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Forestry Division, in declaring Red Flag Fire Alert days and in recommending Burn Bans to the Governor.
